Why We Moved to Webflow: A New Chapter for NetActuate

This week we launched the new NetActuate website built entirely on Webflow—a modern, secure, and intuitive platform that gives our team more creative control and technical efficiency than ever before. This shift away from WordPress marks a significant milestone in our ongoing mission to deliver a seamless, reliable digital experience for our global community. Not only did we update our site to better reflect who we are and what we do, we migrated to an optimized website platform that better reflects our commitment to quality design, function, user experience, and security. We’d like to offer a sincere thanks to our website design partners, WebFolks.

Why We Left WordPress

Our decision to migrate away from WordPress wasn’t made lightly. As long-time supporters of open source technology, we appreciate WordPress’s history and tremendous impact over the years. However, the platform has been plagued by controversies and growing concerns that began to outweigh its benefits.

Community Conflict and Governance Challenges

WordPress has recently been embroiled in high-profile controversies, including a dramatic legal battle with WP Engine over the WP brand name. As TechCrunch reports, the dispute exposed fractures in the WordPress ecosystem, from branding rights to accusations of monopolistic behavior. Community infighting has left developers and users uncertain about the platform’s future direction and governance.

Development Delays

Another factor in our decision was the growing frustration with development delays within the WordPress core team. According to Search Engine Journal, core updates were recently paused for weeks due to internal restructuring and resource gaps. For businesses that rely on rapid iteration and stable updates, such delays are an unwanted liability. We were using WP Engine as well, and were impacted by WordPress changes to plugins and the back and forth.

Security Concerns

Website security is more critical today than ever. The open nature of WordPress and its reliance on third-party plugins introduces numerous vulnerabilities. A recent example, as reported by The Hacker News, involved a critical security flaw that left over 100,000 sites exposed due to a plugin vulnerability. Managing plugins, vetting code, and ensuring secure configurations can prove to be a burden to busy technical staff.

Why We Chose Webflow

In contrast, Webflow offered a compelling, modern alternative.

Greater Design Freedom

Webflow's visual builder and CMS empower our design and content teams to work more freely and efficiently. With powerful design tools and intuitive, designer-friendly interface, we can rapidly build, update, and deploy content-rich pages in less time. Yes, WordPress can do much of the same with extensive plugins, but that ends up adding to complexity and overhead where Webflow provides this out of the box.

Clean Code, No Bloat

Webflow outputs clean, semantic HTML/CSS without the bloated code and legacy overhead typical of WordPress themes and plugins. This results in faster load times, better SEO performance, and easier maintenance.

Built-in Security and Features

Webflow is a closed system, which significantly reduces the attack surface compared to open-source platforms with thousands of third-party integrations. Webflow’s comprehensive list of built-in features mean we no longer have to rely on third-party plugins, minimizing maintenance risks and reducing operational overhead.

Open Source Still Critical to Software Development

At NetActuate, we remain passionate advocates for open source, support projects like NTP Pool, Varnish Cache, CPAN, FreeBSD, H-Root, and Linux and utilize open source platforms and tools in our infrastructure. Open source is the de facto way most modern software is built—and in many cases—is the best choice for a wide variety of software platforms.

We also acknowledge and support the Linux Foundation’s recent efforts to resolve the turmoil within the WordPress community. Their intervention is a hopeful sign that WordPress can regain its footing and evolve to a better place.

While it’s never an easy decision to move away from an 0pen source project, in the case of our website design/development/hosting, we found that a proprietary tool has proven to be the better choice for us.

Looking Forward

Webflow allows us to meet our design, performance, and security goals without compromise. Our focus is on providing the best digital experience possible—today. We now have a platform that lets us move faster, work smarter, and serve our users better. We’re excited for what comes next and are excited to leverage the tools that help us build a stronger web presence.

We encourage you to click through our new website and let us know your thoughts. Stay tuned for more updates and enhancements as we continue evolving the NetActuate digital experience.
