Open Source at NetActuate

NetActuate is committed to supporting the open source software (OSS) projects critical to the internet. We provide global infrastructure to keep community-driven projects strong, sustainable, and truly independent.

Why Independent OSS Matters

The growing concentration of power in the tech industry creates risks for both users and developers. By supporting independent projects, we help ensure:

Digital Choice

Open Source gives users alternatives to closed, proprietary ecosystems, and reduces vendor lock-in.

Reliability

Open source for high-availability infrastructure helps ensure critical services stay online for users around the globe.

Community Building

Open source is the de facto way to create software today and it literally “takes a village” to fill critical, unaddressed technology gaps.

Mark Mahle
CEO of NetActuate

Open source is an essential way for NetActuate to offer maximum choice and flexibility for our customers. It is part of our mission to provide infrastructure support so independent OSS projects remain strong and sustainable for all.

Projects We Support

Through donations we support the communities and projects that the internet relies on:

Donated Infrastructure

Dedicated bare-metal compute for the project’s Cirrus CI runner.

Impact

Expands continuous integration capacity, enabling faster build times and quicker feedback for global contributors working on GitHub workflows.

Legacy

As long-term users and supporters of FreeBSD, we also host the FreeBSD Forums.
NetActuate’s support will make a real difference for our CI efforts. The new Cirrus runner will speed up builds and testing for GitHub contributions, helping us keep FreeBSD development moving smoothly.
Ed Maste
Senior Director of Technology, FreeBSD Foundation

Donated Infrastructure

The physical gear—bare metal servers, power, networking, and storage—to host the project's central cluster.

Global Resilience

Global VMs for authoritative DNS and monitoring, as well as BGP Anycast improve consistency across the project’s global endpoints.
We've been keeping time on the internet synchronized since 2003, with thousands of volunteers running time servers worldwide. Planning for another 20+ years requires infrastructure partners who understand global-scale DNS and anycast—not just servers, but expertise. NetActuate brings both.
Ask Bjørn Hansen
NTP Pool Project
Comprehensive Perl Archive Network

Donated Infrastructure

Support for the mirrors and systems powering the Perl community.

Impact

Ensures the sustainability of one of the world's most critical software repositories without compromising its community-governed independence
CPAN Testers has a long history, starting from reports sent via e-mail being collected and distributed via newsgroups to a website storing 150 million records. We're excited to use NetActuate's platform to evolve into a cloud-native data warehouse supporting the Perl language and the CPAN community.
Doug Bell
Project lead, CPAN Testers

Global Networking Community

We are active, contributing members of internet governance bodies, including AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, ICANN, Global Peering Forum, and NANOG. These communities are critical for addressing the pressing regulatory, infrastructure, networking challenges that affect us all.

Kate Gerry
Director of Interconnection, NetActuate

I have the pleasure of meeting face-to-face with the global internet community on a regular basis all over the globe. The culture of friendly collaboration between technical engineers and developers is what drives the free exchange of ideas and the open internet.

A Free Program for ccTLDs

In order to help ccTLDs (country code top-level domain providers) in emerging markets meet and overcome challenges with security, resiliency, and network performance, NetActuate offers a free Anycast DNS services to ccTLDs with under 100,000 primary zones. This helps emerging ccTLDs better serve their communities with the network and infrastructure needed to build a self-sustaining, long-term service.

The NetActuate "Open Source First" Approach

Over the last 20 years, open source software has been an integral element of our global edge infrastructure and network. Building with open source offers maximum choice and flexibility for our customers.

Vendor Independence

We’ve developed playbooks for Ansible, Terraform, and OpenTofu, to facilitate customer onboarding and avoid vendor lock-in.

Open Standards

Our global platform is built on open technologies like KVM and Open vSwitch to maintain interoperability and transparency.
