Porter Labs needed a reliable, scalable provider to host their cloud services, while maintaining affordability and avoiding long-term technical debt. For many startups, the obvious solution is to use a well known platform such as Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure. These providers typically offer credits to early-stage startups, often worth up to $500k.
These credits are attractive in order to reduce costs when startup budgets are tight. However, once a company scales up, cloud compute costs can often spiral out of control. And moving between cloud providers can be extremely costly and time-consuming, if not impossible.
Porter Labs took a different approach. While they accepted credits from typical cloud providers, they built their system to be cloud-agnostic and easily ported to different services.
Porter Labs’ backend is built as a hybrid cloud model. Real-time processing is hosted on NetActuate, while data analysis can easily be run through tools such as Google Cloud’s BigQuery.
When I took ownership of the network at Dialpad, I saw the challenges that cloud-centric startups face with growing costs. Building a global network and hybrid cloud model was a difficult and expensive challenge. We’re avoiding that technical debt at Porter Labs by starting with a provider-agnostic model.
